Holi, in India, is a festival of colors. We all play with different types of colours, some natural, some made with chemicals. Lathmar Holi, is celebrated a few days before the actual Holi.
It is a festival of great importance, as the Hindu God Shri Krishna and his consort Devi Radha had started this festival during the Dwapara Yug.
It is widely celebrated in Barsana and Nandgaon, Uttar Pradesh, India. According to legend, Radha and her friends (sakhis) were being teased by Krishna and his friends (sakhas). The women decided to teach the men a lesson. Hence they attacked the men with lathis (sticks). The men tried to protect themselves with shields, but those who failed, were captured by the gopis (the females) and made to dance in female apparel.
The name Lathmar Holi thus originated from here and is considered to be a very auspicious occasion, dedicated to Radha Krishna.
